The Bloom family somehow finds its way to Japan, for two years of cross-cultural hijinks. For the kids, it's "What can we buy?" For the parents, it's "What were we thinking?" For the readers of this blog, it's "There but for the grace of God..."

And you thought....
No, Japan is not the land of the rising sun. It is the land of the hanging clothes.
There goes one of the crows, after someones undies.
No hiding those clothes in the backyard, eh? I love the one of the bay window with its long johns.
We have a bevy of crows in Copper Harbor as well but they are pretty tame compared to those Japanese ones. But they are noisy and, unfortnately, seem to be increasing. Come to think of it, there are fewer Barn Swallows around these days and in direct proportion to the increase in crows. Hummmm...
I'll tell you one thing, though, and that is that crows are afraid of hawks and falcons. One day. while walking down Eastward on M-26 out of Copper Harbor we spotted a crow cringing in the fork of a tree. I thought he/she looked frightened or was hurt. We stopped and looked at him/her (politically correct here) and realized that he/she was looking across the road into another tree. Well, lo and behold, across the road on tree branch sat a small falcon or hawk-- the Keweenaw is a great spring flyover for them--eying that crow with serious intent. We didn't linger to watch the escape or carnage. Maybe Ira could teach the kids to be falconers.
Trina, you have such a wonderful writing style; very humorous, and Ira's addenda are much appreciated. Can't wait to get to Japan some day before you leave.

Trina,
I forgot to mention that I published a picture of Kevin and your dad on my blog, www.circumnavigating.blogspot.com.
